To assist in making an autonomous decision, it could be worthwhile to take the time to consider the following questions:
What expectations do I have for therapy?
Do I want to focus on any particular challenge, issue, or concern?
Do I want to know more about who I am and what challenges I face?
What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of undergoing therapy?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of not receiving therapy? This is also something that needs to be taken into account.
What are the practical (work and family obligations, upcoming vacation, finances) and internal (attitudes towards asking for help, concerns about what other people might think about me) obstacles preventing me from attending therapy?
How could I get past this?
The purpose of this short article is to prepare you for therapy.
It is understandable and expected that you may feel anxious/nervous about therapy and possibly by the following questions, this is common and a part of the therapeutic process. If you find it difficult the answer questions on your own, this is something that can be covered during consultation or your first session, if you decide that therapy is not for you or you are not ready, you do not have to continue.
